Reproduced from the Big Flats Historical Society 2009 Calendar:
"In 1940 the USDA Soil Conservation Service established a facility at Big Flats. Until 1941 the labor force was supplied by CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) who lived in barracks. CCC closed and then, until late 1942, the labor was from local Big Flats people. In Aug. 1942 to 1946 the labor force was changed to CPS (Civilian Public Service) providing conscientious objectors in the US an alternative to military service during WWII. It is now called the Big Flats Plant and Materials Center. Most of the community still call it "The Nursery". The building is different now since the old house was burned down. It was originally part of the Mundy farms."
